  • Memoirs of a Record Collector and Sound Recording Engineer: The Autobiography of Peter Copeland

    Peter Copeland

    language (, May 24, 2015)
The autobiography of Peter Copeland (17th July 1942 to 30th JUly 2006), joint BAFTA winning BBC sound engineer and later Technical manager at the National Sound Archive (part of the British Library). This book will be mainly of academic interest to students interested in the development of sound recording and to social historians of the twentieth century. It is the story of a young man who was an enthusiastic sound recording amateur and avid record collector. On a shoestring, he customized any sound equipment to hand. In these early years, with help from his Meccano set, National Milk tins, Glitterwax and Sellotape, and with the advice of other like-minded enthusiasts he was able to mirror and even sometimes anticipate Sound Recording Industry developments. For the social historian there are anecdotes and glimpses of life behind the scenes at the BBC, written throughout with a wry sense of humour. Other subjects touched upon are public transport (trams, trolleybuses, buses and trains) and the duties of a bus conductor in the 1950s. Peter was also a pioneer in the techniques used for the recording of bird song. In later years, as a dubbing mixer at BBC Bristol, Peter became the affable boffin whose knowledge and expertise in his field was much admired by both his colleagues and university academics. His skill was largely experimental or forensic in nature. From the largely factual account of a long career Peter's sensitive but sometimes fiery personality shines through.Peter's legacy at the National Sound Archive is the "Manual of Analogue Sound Restoration Techniques".
